After performing a fresh installation of Debian 11 with the Cinnamon desktop I'm very well pleased.
The Debian Team did a fantastic job!
I had trouble with the installer when choosing to use the Graphical Installer. For some reason the installer couldn't see my wireless network. So to fix that I rebooted and choose the Live Debian 11 with the kernel.
After rebooting into the Live version I clicked on the network manager and selected my network, typed in the passphrase key and was very quickly connected to my network. Then double clicked on the desktop icon: "Install Debian" and I was off and moving forward with the installation.
The Menu was nice but I wanted the Sweet Folders and the Candy Icons so I installed them.
There is a wide selection of backgrounds / desktop wallpapers that come with Debian 11.
Here are a few more screenshots of the desktop.
The Software Manager has all sorts of neat programs and applications to select from and it's easy to use.
The Settings Manager is easy and straight forward to use also.
Here are screenshot's of the calculator, Gimp and LibreOffice.
Synaptic Package Manager is installed right out of the box.
See in the white space where the number 24 is, I was hoping to change the white to any other color however; there isn't a color selection in the drop down menu.
Gimp is a good program that you can create just about anything you'd like.
In Gimp you can resize pictures, add text and so many more options.
LibreOffice is great for creating business letters or other types of documents that you may need.
Debian 11 Cinnamon comes with games just like most of the other Linux distributions.
Majongg is one of my favorites.
The Pictures default to the Gimp program for some reason. For now I have to right click on a picture and select the Image Viewer each time. I'll rectify that later.
Image Magick and Shotwell Viewer are also in the drop down Menu as alternatives for opening pictures.
As I shared earlier on in the post; this fresh installation didn't come with the Sweet Folders or the Candy Icons, I had to download them, untar them and then more them to the /usr/share/icons/ directory with the mv command with root privileges.
Sweet Folders using LibreOffice:
Candy Icons in LibreOffice:
First download the Sweet Folders here:
Then download the Candy Icons here:
Once you have downloaded those folders and icons open them with the Archive Manager and extract them.
- Use the terminal to cd to the Downloads directory. Once in the Downloads directory become root and move them to the /usr/share/icons/ directory with root privileges. Like so:
cd Downloads press Enter
Then type ls
Then type:
sudo mv Sweet-Rainbow /usr/share/icons/
Then repeat the same for the candy-icons.
When done go to your Menu and select Settings> Themes> Icons and you'll see where the Sweet Folders appear and select it. Like in this screenshot.
I ran Debian 10 Mate for a long time and it was very stable and I enjoyed it.
This version of Debian 11 has been running stable and the update manager is easy to use and pretty fast.
My Update Manager is set to download and install updates automatically but you can change that if you wish.
This Debian 11 Cinnamon installation is using kernel: 5.10.0-20.
I've been glued to this fresh installation for the last few days and again really pleased with the install. It's performance, stability, look and feel is undeniably fantastic! Kudos to the Debian Team!
Have a great weekend!
