Finding The Right Cursor Theme

Trying to find just the right cursor theme that's the right size can be a daunting task. I say that because what should have taken maybe 15-20 minutes took me recently 3 hours! Yeah, you read that right 3 hours.

When your monitor's screen is 1920 x 1080 or larger you can run into size issue's with cursor theme's.

In Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon under the Mouse and Touchpad Settings I was able to raise up the size of the cursor. However, I was only able to do that because the cursor that I downloaded from cinnamon-look.org came with the variety of sizes.

On this page you'll see where the cursor sizes are increased.

Description:

A larger stylized oxygen mouse theme based on Qwerta's Oxygen Neon theme featuring cursor sizes of 32, 48, 64, 72, 96px.

If I'm not mistaken the standard size is 32.

Not all of the cursor's that you can download on the cinnamon-look website have all of the various sizes. And not all of the sizes are listed in the description on the page.

Sometimes the sizes are in the 'ReadMe' file so check there.

That 'ReadMe' file should be in the same directory with the cursor you downloaded, if it's provided.

***Until you find the 'correct size' trying to move the pointer to the size and speed (larger scale) won't work as it will only change "if" you find a cursor theme with most of the sizes given, like in my example.***

This is also the case for the gnome-look cursors as well, so I found out.

Once you find the right cursor that has the correct size: 32, 48, 64, 72 and etc.....go to the directory you downloaded it to and extract it.

Once extracted, open your terminal, become root and move it to your /usr/share/icons/ directory. Like so:

Then open your Settings Manager and go to Themes and you'll see the new cursor in the menu. Simply select it.

If your wondering why it took 3 hours to find a cursor it was because the size wasn't always listed in the description. OR> there wasn't a 'ReadMe' file provided in that directory that came with the download.

Somethings you just have to weed through.

Enjoy the week ahead!
