How To Get An HP Printer Working Under Linux

Getting your HP printer working under Linux is fairly easy.

There is a program called HPLIP.

That stands for HP Linux Imaging and Printing.

HPLIP may already be in your Software Mangers repo so check first before downloading HPLIP and running the script.

HPLIP can be downloaded from here:

Once you download HPLIP just cd to the directory that it's in and run the script.

Like so:

cd name of directory

Than type ls and press Enter to show everything in that directory.

Than type sh hplip-3.21.10.run and press Enter.

The command ls is a Linux command that tells the terminal in Linux to list what is in a file or a directory. The command cd means change directory. Changing to another directory other than the home directory is necessary when you have downloaded a program to a different directory.

To be sure without any confusion I always download things to my Downloads directory.

The installer should take off in the terminal and begin the installation process. It will ask you a few questions and than proceed with the install.

When I installed HPLIP last week the install took about 10 to 15 minutes.

Now depending on which Linux distro you are running the HP Device Manager should show in your system tray.

In Linux Mint the HP Device Manager shows in the system tray and also in the start menu under Administration.

Once you have HPLIP installed go through the HP setup wizard step by step to have the printer recognized. IF the printer isn't recognized you can go to the online cups website and add your printer that way. Click on Printers and add your printer following the wizard.

That address is:

Should you still have trouble getting your printer to be recognized you'll have to manually type in your printers URI in the HP Device Mangers wizard.

With the printer turned on run this command in the terminal to find the printer's URI.

hp-makeuri ip address of your printer

I had a hard time getting my HP Envy working but that was because it's a wireless printer and two, the ip address kept changing every time a new device was added to the network. So, keep that in mind "if" you have a wireless printer.

Most printers have the ip address already on the screen of the printer.
