Before I started downloading and installing the Heroic Games Launcher or created an account with Epic Games I installed the newest version of Wine.
Sometimes Linux Mint or Ubuntu may have an older version of Wine installed.
To find out if Wine is installed run this command:
To ensure you have the current version of Wine run:
Those instructions for installing Wine are here:
Linux Mint 21.1 is based on Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish so you will want to copy that command.
Here's a 'Heads up' (see the screenshot) you will have to type in the url after the command as it will not copy using the mouse. Try it twice and the link turns yellow and will not copy.
The screenshot shows my cursor pointing to the url that I'm referring to that has to be manually typed in directly after the command.
Put a space after the d/ before you manually type in the url. In other words, after you type the command below press the space bar on your keyboard once after the / (forward slash) in the word list.d/.
Also on that same page for Wine select the "Stable Branch" command and run that.
Heroic is available as a flatpak and other packages as well however, I didn't want to use a flatpak package as I haven't had success with them in the past.
Here's the link if you want 'anything other' than the AppImage that I'm using in this tutorial:
You can also use Lutris if you'd like. I won't be covering Lutris in this tutorial.
Download the 'Heroic-2.8.0.AppImage' on this page in the link below to the directory of your choice. Then right click on Heroic and make it executable by checking the box.
Here's the link:
Once Heroic is downloaded right click on it and go to Properties> Permissions> and make it executable by checking the box 'Allow executing file as program'.
Make sure in the 'Group' section of the 'Permissions' tab of the file that it is the user's name in that box.
Additional information about Heroic and the WiKi is helpful so have a look at that too.
To launch Heroic simply double click on it from the directory that it is in.
Running Epic Games is fairly easy once you create an account.
If you don't have an account click 'Sign In' at the top right of the page. Then click 'Sign Up' at the bottom of the page: where it says Don't have an Epic Games Account?
Link to get you started on setting up your new Epic Games Account:
Each time you log into your Epic Games account they will send you a verification code to the e-mail address you used when you created your account.
This is the standard practice now.
Steam does the same thing when I log in to my Steam account.
You can log into Epic Games through the Heroic Games Launcher.
You can also log in with your Steam account if you'd like.
I use Epic Alternative Login Method and it works just fine. The choice is yours to make.
Enjoy gaming on your Linux box with the Heroic Games Launcher and Epic Games!
Cheers,
Alex
